First Thing’s First

We can get our priorities mixed up all the time. It’s extremely easy to do and we all do it. Sometimes we concentrate on work too much and don’t give enough attention to our families, or sometimes we are involved in sports and can forget about practically everything. I get my priorities mixed up. I’m writing this as I sit in my school parking lot waiting to go in because I didn’t do it ahead of time. But one priority we often “misplace” is God.

I don’t mean we forget to put “God First” in our social media bios. I mean the most important thing about our relationship with God is our relationship with God. This will be a shock to some people or at least a wake up call: making disciples isn’t our priority. Yeah, sure it’s up there and it’s really important but we shouldn’t make it our lives we should make Jesus our lives.

But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.” The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:40-42‬

Martha has become preoccupied with her own things while Mary is consumed by her relationship with Jesus. The Lord explains to her a true relationship with Christ is more important than anything. If we don’t have a strong relationship with Jesus how can we really show people Jesus if we don’t know him that well.

Discipleship is very important, but we cannot put it above it above our relationship with our Father. It seems selfish but it’s not. We could possibly lead people on the wrong direction if we don’t have a strong relationship with Jesus ourselves. If we have a powerful relationship with Him, we won’t have to put in effort towards finding “discipleable” people, he will provide them to us. They will just show up and we will think “how did this happen?, I didn’t even do anything”. Jesus will give us people to disciple if we are ready and honed-in on him. Focusing on God above other things can be hard. We get distracted so easily as I mentioned before. Giving our full time and attention to God can be hard when you can’t even pay attention in class because a fruitfly is flying around. Jesus is much more interesting and important than any of my teachers could dream. (Sorry)

So, we have to remember that a relationship with Jesus is priceless. Above all things Jesus is more worthy than anything else we can give our time to. He gave his life for us, we can give our time for him.

Fun Fact: Billy goats pee on their own heads to attract females. Think about that next time you go to a petting zoo.
