Inflexible & Incapable

Matchbox is excited to announce a new writer! Personally,  I’ve known this friend of ours for 16 years, 6 months, and 18 days. She’s one of the funniest and most thoughtful people I know, and I’m SO excited she has decided to join the team. Unfortunately, we haven’t talked her into being a weekly contributor, but expect for her to pop up every now and then. Get ready for good thoughts and tasteful sarcasm. I know you’ll enjoy hearing from her (almost) as much as I do. -Alex

In the past few years, I’ve learned that I am a very stubborn person. My mom pointed it out to me one day, and I refused to believe it – which just proved how right she was.

Part of the reason for my stubbornness is that I hate asking for help. I love to give help but usually hate to receive it. I feel too needy, and I like to do it myself. I want to show that I am capable of doing things on my own even when I really do need help.

Sometimes we act this way towards God. We don’t want to ask for help, and we try to show God that we are strong enough. However, we really do need help. Life isn’t easy, and we are weak. We are incapable to do anything on our own.

In John 15:5 it says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

The last part of the verse says, “for apart from me you can do nothing”. This gives proof that we can’t do anything on our own and that we need God. When we realize that we can’t do everything on our own, we’ll be more willing to ask God for help. And God will help.

Over and over in scripture, God has helped those who have asked.

“O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.”- Psalms 30:2

“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.” – Psalms 107:28

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock making my steps secure.” Psalms 40:1-2

Don’t hesitate to ask God for help. You can’t do it on your own, and when you ask, he will help.
