Relationships today, like most things, are not what they used to be. We have social media telling us we need to achieve all these crazy #relationshipgoals and TV and movies portraying some not so wholesome and pure relationships. In church we are told to look for significant others who love the Lord and share our values. But, this doesn’t tell us exactly what to look for in a potential boyfriend or girlfriend. How can we know what to look for? I know that most believers have heard about the ‘Proverbs 31 woman’. I know that young women have often been told to model themselves after her. This is not going to be about the Proverbs 31 woman. I am going to tell you about the Proverbs 31 couple. That’s right. Couple.
If the Proverbs 31 woman is far more precious than rubies, or any other precious jewel for that matter, then shouldn’t she be treated as such?
In this couple dynamic, the man needs to show the woman that he knows her worth. He cherishes her and shows her his love every day. He doesn’t just say, “Yeah, I married up”; he shows with his words and actions that he knows his wife is worth more than the most precious jewels he could ever buy.
In Proverbs 31:11 we learn that the woman is 100% trustworthy.
If the man trusts his lady, then he should not question her. He should know that she would never do anything to harm him or betray the trust he has placed in her. In return, she should also trust him. Guys, you are supposed to be the leader of the household. Your wife should be able to trust that you will make the right decisions for yourself, her, and your family.
This woman also is able to provide for her family.
While it isn’t said that she goes out and works in a factory every day, it is said that she is buying fields and making sure her work is profitable. She is able to do this because her husband supports her in all that she does. He does not hold her back or put a stop to her work. She makes sure that everyone in her family is provided for and also sells goods at the market, where it is said that her husband is well known. He knows his wife is strong and also that he can trust her to make decisions. He is the leader of the house but he is not a dictator. He does not control her. He builds her up and sees her accomplishments.
In verse 28, we learn that the Proverbs 31 man is a constant source of encouragement to his wife.
He sings her praises and tells her that she is far better than any other woman. While most women would not want their boyfriends, fiancés, or husbands to look at other women to compare their wife to, the Proverbs 31 man proves to us that there is no comparison between his wife and other women. His love for her far surpasses anything he could ever feel for another woman, and he is only interested in her.
This relationship dynamic is far more romantic than any I have seen recently in movies or on TV. This type of relationship is one that every young person should strive to have one day. Ladies, be the Proverbs 31 woman that loves, supports, and provides for her husband. Men, be the Proverbs 31 man that loves, cherishes, encourages, supports, praises, leads, and provides for his wife. This is the kind of relationship that will create happy marriages.
And we all know that happy wife means happy life.
