We’ve all heard the saying, “God is good all the time and all the time God is good.” I’m sure that you had already finished saying it in your head before you even read it, because that’s just how common it is. However, sometimes life can be extremely hard and overbearing. We go through heartache, sickness, depression, death, and just normal day to day life that makes everything seem to be so hard. So, when these trials pop up into our lives, sometimes the goodness of God doesn’t seem so good.
Recently, I went to a funeral for someone my family knew well. At the funeral, there was a group of men that came up to sing. They sang a few songs, but there was one that stuck out to me above all the others. They sang “How Great Thou Art.” Again, remember I was at a funeral. Someone had just died, and these men got up to sing about the greatness of God. I know that this person was going to Heaven, but the family and friends of this person were mourning, and it didn’t seem like the time to tell people how great God was.It seemed more like the time for people to hug and cry and talk about how great the person they just lost was. It just didn’t make sense to me. I began to think while they sang, and realized that yeah God is still great. I mean I knew that He was, but it wasn’t something on my mind to think about when the death happened. It was just a clear reminder to me that God really is still good, even in the bad. That God really is good all the time and all the time God really is good. It was a lesson that I really need to hold onto.
When I go through rough patches, it is so easy to blame God. It is so easy to think that God is against me. It is so easy to think that God isn’t good. It is so easy to think that God isn’t for me. It is so easy to think all of these things, but NONE of them are true! All of those are SO wrong! When I face these challenges, I have to stop and constantly tell myself that God is good, He is not fighting against me, that He will comfort me, and that He will get me through this. We all need to remember that God is always good, no matter the situation.
Here’s some scripture just to remind all of us how great and good God really is and to remind us that God is never against us:
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8
“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34
“For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.” 1 Chronicles 16:25
“Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable.” Job 36:26
“‘Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you'” Deuteronomy 31:6
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31
So, when life gets tougher than normal, remember that God is still good. God is still great. Don’t be dumb like me and question those truths. Know that God is good. Know that God is great. Know that God is for you and not against you. Know and really believe that God is good ALL the time and ALL the time God is good. Don’t grow doubtful of any of those truths. Don’t let the bad days, weeks, months, or even years change your view on God and his goodness.
